Don't confuse our kickboxing classes with the mainstream "cardio-kickboxing" classes you see in gyms across the area. Muay Thai kickboxing at Madama Jiu-Jitsu Academy represents authentic fight training for practitioners of all levels.  These are a high energy classes where students can burn up to 800 calories in a workout! Kickboxing training is very safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights.

Students will learn fundamental punches, kicks, elbows and knees. Classes consist of footwork skills, shadow boxing, drills, pad work, heavy bag training and various partner coordination drills. Sparring is available for intermediate and advanced students. If one does not wish to spar, then that is perfectly fine. We do not make anyone do anything that is out of their comfort level.

History of Muay Thai

"Muay Thai" is the traditional martial art of the Thai people. The word "Muay" (pronounced "moo-ai") means boxing. In ancient times, when the Thai people had to fight off marauders to protect their communities their soldiers used Krabi (swords)-Krabong (staffs) arts. But when they lost their weapons or it was impractical to use them, they relied on muay or boxing.

Muay Thai is the art of your fists, elbows, knees and feet as weapons to hurt enemies. There is no doubt that Muay Thai is one of the most powerful and effective martial arts. For this reason, most martial artists have some sort of training - if not being expert - in Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Since there are no marauders attacking the Thai people, Muay Thai has been developed into a professional sport in Thailand but is also practiced for self-defense and fitness.

Muay Thai is now well-known around the world. Men and women at any age, including children, can learn and practice Muay Thai for their recreation, sport or even in the real competition.
