Promotion Day

Mark it in your calendar:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Promotions
Saturday, April 26th

We realize that it’s been a while but Promotion Day is finally upon us. Join us on Saturday, April 26th at noon (normal class time) for promotions. We will be teaching a shortened regular class and then the festivities will begin.

Please wear your academy gi, if you have one. Refreshments will be served.

Promotions will be just for the adults. Our kids will be promoted during the month this month and, if you can’t make Saturday and you’re due for a promotion, don’t worry, we will catch up with you during the week!

Jason Rau Seminar

Jason Rau, Matt Serra black belt and multiple competition jiu-jitsu champion, will be teaching a one-time only seminar at Madama Jiu-Jitsu Academy on Sunday, April 23rd at 1PM. Jason has some of the finest guard passing on the competition scene today and is practicing jiu-jitsu at the highest level. This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the newest masters of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Pre-registration is $50.00 and registration the day of the seminar (i.e. walk-ins) is $100.00. Please note that this event is cash only. Teammates, please register your spot early for this event; we wouldn't want anyone to miss this event!

Spaced Repitition

This weekend, Professor Madama explained one of the reasons that he has developed the Jiu-Jitsu College mastery program. He wrote on Facebook:

This video explains some of the science behind the philosophy I used to generate our new flexible schedule. I believe that one of the biggest challenges for any dedicated school owner is finding a schedule that is both convenient to the students and also most efficient for the accelerated learning of the student body.

I am sure the new schedule will not accommodate everyone but I am confident that it is a giant step in the right direction. I will be happy to have classes run all day, so give these new classes a fighting chance and show up often. Do that and I may just see a need for some more classes at different times of day.

Thank you all. I am going to a new place. Please come with me.

Jiu-Jitsu College

Four semesters per year! Eight new classes per week!

Become the technician you should be with our new system at no extra charge to our students! This is a personal development project that Professor Madama created for himself that he is using to help his students and teammates dramatically improve their grappling.

The college courses will cover eight broad subjects and rotate every three months. The covered subjects are:

  • Closed Guard
  • Open Guard
  • Half Guard
  • Mount
  • Cross-Side
  • Back Mount
  • Ashi Garami
  • Takedowns

Detailed college class information is available at the academy. Team rashguards MUST be worn during these classes!

Come with Professor Madama as he helps take our Jiu Jitsu to another level.

Edson Barboza

Edson Barboza, arguably the best kicker and the #4 ranked lightweight in the UFC, will be teaching at the academy during one of the evening kickboxing classes this week. We're not being coy, we just don't know what day it will be yet - as Edson hasn't set his schedule for next week yet.

So it is important that you get there everyday this week so as not to miss this unique opportunity to learn striking techniques from one of the best in the business.

Kickboxing Results

From Kru Mike Lanzano regarding Eddie Mercado and Drew LeCompte and their kickboxing debuts at Warrior's Cup in New York last Saturday:

"Very proud of Eddie and Drew! Drew lost a close decision and Eddie lost a decision that he definitely won! We have a lot to work on for the next one! Team Madama definitely impressed the promotion!"

Classes Added!

Three classes added:

  • Friday, 6PM - No Gi Jiu-Jitsu (all levels)
  • Friday, 7PM - Muay Thai (all levels)
  • Saturday, 1PM - No Gi Jiu-Jitsu (all levels)

Additionally, Tuesday and Thursday evening advanced classes will have simultaneous gi and no gi classes. See the schedule page for details.

Jersey Tough

Author and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, Big Chuck Bradshaw, will be at Madama Jiu-Jitsu Academy on Monday, March 12 at 7PM to sign his new book, "Jersey Tough." The legendary Master Renzo Gracie will also be in attendance. Big Chuck was one of Renzo's first American students. Indeed, Big Chuck was among the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students on the East Coast.

Big Chuck Bradshaw

Big Chuck Bradshaw

It was as a student under Renzo Gracie that Professor Josh Madama became good friends with Big Chuck. "Without guys like Big Chuck and, of course, Renzo there would be no Madama Jiu-Jitsu Academy," Josh says. "Big Chuck is like a brother to me."

If you are a student or friend of the Academy, an ex-biker, a cop, a fan of jiu-jitsu or MMA and would like to meet Chuck and Renzo, you are encouraged to come out to the Academy on Monday night. Refreshments will be served by Jill, owner of the Revolutionary Lounge.

There will be no classes at the Academy Monday night as Big Chuck will be signing his book and, along with Renzo, meeting and talking with old friends, new friends, and fans. There will be books available to purchase.

Let's get out there and meet two legends!

Drew Lecompte, Upcoming Fight

Drew Lecompte

Drew Lecompte

Drew Lecompte is fighting in his second MMA fight on Saturday, March 12 at the Rahway Recreation Center. Drew has been putting insane preparation time and effort getting ready for this fight. He's ready!

Tickets are only $45. Let's make sure we support our teammate and let's make this another incredible Madama showing. Tickets are available at the desk at the Academy.

Mike Elshamy, Professional MMA Win

On March 4th, Mike Elshamy won his third professional MMA fight verses a very tough Tommy DiBernardo. Shamy showed off his striking skills by winning a three round decision without ever bringing the fight to the ground.

Shamy is generally considered a wrestler and a submission specialist (winning his first two fights by submission). In this fight, DiBernardo tried several times to bring the fight to the ground but Shamy was able to use expert takedown defense to keep the fight on the feet. Shamy won all three rounds in the unanimous decision.
